What do used clothing and household goods, 19th Century College students, and Holiness have to do with you? I hope, LOTS! Let me explain.

Since 1833 in Paris and 1851 in Philadelphia, the members of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul have been following the direction of our founders to grow in Holiness and prove our Faith by serving the poor. Blessed Frederic Ozanam and five friends, all college students, took to heart the observation of our Patron Saint, Vincent de Paul that the poor suffer less from a lack of charity than from a lack of organization. The organization they founded has grown into an international reality in over 150 countries with close to 1 million members.

In each of the 50+ conferences throughout the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, we still “Go to the Poor” bringing hope, and friendship along with encouragement and perhaps financial help for housing, utilities, car repairs, food — whatever is needed. For the 2022-23 Vincentian year, our 794 members visited with 650,330 neighbors, drove 47,534 miles, and contributed $1,171,307 to the lives of our neighbors.

While the conferences exist to support our neighbors, the Archdiocesan Central Council exists to support the work of the conferences. We do the ‘organization’ so they can do the ‘charity’ but it is all with the same goal — to grow in holiness through our work with God’s children in need.
